The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard case material exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) was the main exporter of paperboard case materials, constituting 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together making up a 48% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paperboard case material exports from Indonesia stood at +12.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+13.3%) and Malaysia (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 31%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paperboard case material imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 25%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
