Wrapping Papers Market Size in South Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, the South African wrapping papers market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Wrapping papers consumption peaked at $X in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Namibia (X tonnes), Zimbabwe (X tonnes) and Mozambique (X tonnes) were the main destinations of wrapping papers exports from South Africa, together comprising X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Zimbabwe, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Namibia ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Zimbabwe saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average wrapping papers export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 an increase of X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Ghana ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ghana, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into South Africa

In 2020, the amount of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard imported into South Africa shrank slightly to X tonnes, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, imports, however, enjoyed slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports reduced to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Austria (X tonnes), Sweden (X tonnes) and Finland (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of wrapping papers imports to South Africa, with a combined X% share of total imports. Brazil, the Czech Republic, Spain, Russia, Australia, China, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Germany and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bulgaria, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per tonne), while the price for Australia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
