In value terms, exports of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Namibia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements from South Africa, together accounting for 34% of total exports. Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, China, the United States, India, Swaziland, Guinea, Australia, Botswana and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +115.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zambia ($X), Namibia ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) constituted the largest markets for toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising 36% of total exports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, the United States, China, Botswana, Guinea, Belgium, Australia, Swaziland and India, which together accounted for a further 43%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +102.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average export price for toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements to South Africa, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), twofold. In 2021, the average import price for toothed wheels, chain sprockets and other transmission elements amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
