Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into South Africa

In 2018, approx. X tonnes of sunflower seed were imported into South Africa; growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, sunflower seed imports continue to indicate skyrocketing growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, sunflower seed imports reached their peak figure at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports stood at $X in 2018. In general, sunflower seed imports continue to indicate a remarkable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, sunflower seed imports reached their maximum in 2018 and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Romania (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to South Africa, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, sunflower seed imports from Romania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tonnes), more than tenfold. Malawi (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per tonne), while the price for Botswana ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
