Shampoo Market Size in South Africa

In 2020, the South African shampoo market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. In value terms, shampoo exports contracted slightly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Namibia (X tonnes) was the main destination for shampoo exports from South Africa, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, shampoo exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (X tonnes), twofold. The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Namibia totaled -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the key foreign market for shampoo exports from South Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Botswana ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Namibia stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year).

In 2020, the average shampoo export price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritius, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the amount of shampoos imported into South Africa reduced to X tonnes, waning by -X% on the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated measured growth from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y.
