In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tonnes) was the main destination for pyrethrum and peppermint exports from South Africa, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pyrethrum and peppermint exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tonnes), threefold. Swaziland (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-X% per year) and Swaziland (+X% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for pyrethrum and peppermint exports from South Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by South Korea ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+X% per year) and the Netherlands (+X% per year).

The average pyrethrum and peppermint export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of pyrethrum and peppermint, which increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports declined modestly to $X in 2020. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices failed to regain the momentum.
