Crude Palm Oil Market Size in South Africa

The revenue of the crude palm oil market in South Africa amounted to $X in 2018, rising by X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2018, approx. X tonnes of crude palm oil were exported from South Africa; shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Overall, crude palm oil exports continue to indicate a deep decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with a decrease of -X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude palm oil exports amounted to $X in 2018. Overall, crude palm oil exports continue to indicate an abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. In that year, crude palm oil exports reached their peak of $X. From 2009 to 2018, the growth of crude palm oil exports failed to regain its momentum.

Exports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tonnes) was the main destination for crude palm oil exports from South Africa, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, crude palm oil exports to Zimbabwe exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tonnes), twofold. Botswana (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume to Zimbabwe amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-X% per year) and Botswana (+X% per year).

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) remains the key foreign market for crude palm oil exports from South Africa, comprising X% of total crude palm oil exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by India ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Zimbabwe stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-X% per year) and Swaziland (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the average crude palm oil export price amounted to $X per tonne, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2018, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into South Africa

In 2018, approx. X tonnes of crude palm oil were imported into South Africa; lowering by -X% against the previous year. Overall, crude palm oil imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, imports failed to regain their momentum.

In value terms, crude palm oil imports amounted to $X in 2018. Over the period under review, crude palm oil imports continue to indicate a drastic descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tonnes) and Malaysia (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of crude palm oil imports to South Africa, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia.

In value terms, the largest crude palm oil suppliers to South Africa were Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising X% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Indonesia recorded the highest growth rate of imports, over the last eleven-year period.

Import Prices by Country

The average crude palm oil import price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, coming down by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2007 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, crude palm oil import price decreased by -X% against 2011 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average import prices for crude palm oil reached their maximum at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per tonne), while the price for Indonesia totaled $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia.
