Ginger Market Size in South Africa

In 2019, the South African ginger market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Namibia (X tonnes), Botswana (X tonnes) and Slovakia (X tonnes) were the main destinations of ginger exports from South Africa, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Swaziland, Zambia and Poland, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for ginger exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Slovakia ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of ginger decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2019. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a notable increase.
