Ferrosilicon Market Size in South Africa

Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2019 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ferrosilicon exports shrank to $X in 2020. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. From 2011 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Botswana (X tonnes), Spain (X tonnes) and Australia (X tonnes) were the main destinations of ferrosilicon exports from South Africa, with a combined X% share of total exports. India, the U.S., Namibia, Russia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, the Netherlands, Canada and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by India, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), India ($X) and the U.S. ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for ferrosilicon exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

India (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average ferrosilicon export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the U.S., while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Ferrosilicon imports into South Africa declined rapidly to X tonnes in 2020, waning by -X% compared with 2019. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ferrosilicon imports contracted markedly to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Zambia (X tonnes), Russia (X tonnes) and China (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of ferrosilicon imports to South Africa, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, India, Spain and Norway, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per tonne), while the price for China ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
