Botswana (X units), Namibia (X units) and Swaziland (X units) were the main destinations of desktop computer exports from South Africa, together comprising 81% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Lesotho (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) were the largest markets for desktop computer exported from South Africa worldwide, together accounting for 66% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Namibia, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average desktop computer export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -40.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 47%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of desktop computers were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, desktop computer imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 16%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest desktop computer supplier to South Africa, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, desktop computer imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.2% per year) and Germany (-4.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of desktop computer to South Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+7.2% per year) and the United States (-14.4% per year).

In 2021, the average desktop computer import price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -29.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 37% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the price for Mexico ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
