Exports from South Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of concentrated pineapple juice were exported from South Africa; with an increase of 1.9% against 2020. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -2.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concentrated pineapple juice exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of concentrated pineapple juice exports from South Africa, with a combined 69% share of total exports. Spain, Colombia, Denmark and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Colombia (with a CAGR of +628.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for concentrated pineapple juice exported from South Africa were the Netherlands ($X), Chile ($X) and Russia ($X), together comprising 71% of total exports. Based on 2021 figures, concentrated pineapple juice export price increased by +65.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of concentrated pineapple juice were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed perceptible growth. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concentrated pineapple juice imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Swaziland (X tons) was the main supplier of concentrated pineapple juice to South Africa, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, concentrated pineapple juice imports from Swaziland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Swaziland stood at +18.2%.

In value terms, Swaziland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of concentrated pineapple juice to South Africa, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Swaziland stood at +22.0%.

The average concentrated pineapple juice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 37% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
