Concentrated Orange Juice Exports

In 2021, overseas shipments of concentrated orange juice increased by 15% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 30%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for concentrated orange juice exports from South Africa, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, concentrated orange juice exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Botswana (X tons), with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at +46.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-5.1% per year) and Botswana (-8.7% per year).

The average concentrated orange juice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of concentrated orange juice decreased by -25% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 727%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, concentrated orange juice imports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 323% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Zimbabwe (X tons) constituted the largest concentrated orange juice supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, concentrated orange juice imports from Zimbabwe exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Israel (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Zimbabwe totaled +54.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+246.8% per year) and Brazil (-1.2% per year).

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) constituted the largest supplier of concentrated orange juice to South Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a 25% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Zimbabwe amounted to +36.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (+280.4% per year) and Brazil (-0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average concentrated orange juice import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 81%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
