Canned Pineapple Exports

Exports from South Africa

In 2022, canned pineapple exports from South Africa amounted to X tons, growing by 3.9% compared with the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 83%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned pineapple exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Namibia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main destinations of canned pineapple exports from South Africa, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Botswana, Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In 2022, canned pineapple imports into South Africa soared to X tons, jumping by 24% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned pineapple imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
