Tea Market Size in Slovakia

The Slovak tea market dropped remarkably to $X in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of tea, when their volume increased by X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, tea exports dropped to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tonnes) was the main destination for tea exports from Slovakia, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Poland (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-X% per year) and Poland (+X% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for tea exports from Slovakia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Hungary ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-X% per year) and Italy (+X% per year).

The average tea export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2019, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2020, purchases abroad of tea decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the sixth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2009 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports shrank notably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and Indonesia (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Slovakia, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Indonesia (+X% per year), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, tea import price decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.
