Paper And Paperboard Market Size in Slovakia

After two years of growth, the Slovak paper and paperboard market decreased by -X% to $X in 2019. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Paper And Paperboard Production in Slovakia

In value terms, paper and paperboard production declined to $X in 2019 estimated in export prices. In general, production recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, production failed to regain the momentum.

Exports from Slovakia

In 2019, shipments abroad of paper and paperboard decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, exports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2017 to 2019, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard exports shrank to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2009 to 2019, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tonnes) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Slovakia, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tonnes), twofold. Hungary (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-X% per year) and Hungary (-X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for paper and paperboard exported from Slovakia were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Denmark, the Czech Republic, France, Romania, Austria, the Dominican Republic and Belgium, which together accounted for a further X terms of the main countries of destination, the Dominican Republic recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

The average paper and paperboard export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2018, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2019, purchases abroad of paper and paperboard increased by X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2015, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard imports reduced slightly to $X in 2019. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tonnes), Austria (X tonnes) and the Czech Republic (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of paper and paperboard imports to Slovakia, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Finland, Sweden, Croatia, the Netherlands, Hungary, France, Norway, Italy and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2018, the biggest increases were in Norway, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest paper and paperboard suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising X% of total imports.
