Roasted Coffee Market Size in Scandinavia

After three years of decline, the Scandinavia roasted coffee market increased by 1.1% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the market value increased by 6.2%. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of roasted coffee increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, roasted coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Sweden was the largest exporter of roasted coffee in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2021. Denmark (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (18%). Norway (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of roasted coffee. At the same time, Norway (+9.2%), Denmark (+6.6%) and Finland (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Denmark (+7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest roasted coffee supplying countries in Scandinavia were Sweden ($X), Denmark ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +11.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of roasted coffee increased by 4.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, roasted coffee imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Denmark represented the main importer of roasted coffee in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 42% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Norway (X tons), together achieving a 56% share of total imports. Iceland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Norway and Iceland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Iceland, with a CAGR of +4.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
