The Scandinavia mercury market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a temperate expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Mercury Production in Scandinavia
In value terms, mercury production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of mercuries increased by 72% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mercury exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a precipitous shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Norway represented the main exporter of mercuries in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports finishing at X kg, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. Denmark (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by Sweden (10%).
Norway was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries exports, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012 to 2021. Denmark (-20.3%) and Sweden (-24.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Norway (+80 p.p.), Denmark (+8.8 p.p.) and Sweden (+8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Denmark ($X) emerged as the largest mercury supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
In Denmark, mercury exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+32.1% per year) and Sweden (-21.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 190% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a sharp setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+20.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of mercuries, when their volume increased by 120% to X kg. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 705% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mercury imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 521% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Sweden was the key importer of mercuries in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports recording X kg, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. Denmark (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Norway (7.6%) and Finland (5.6%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mercury imports into Sweden stood at -26.0%. At the same time, Denmark (+21.7%), Norway (+16.9%) and Finland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2021. Denmark (+16 p.p.), Norway (+7.4 p.p.) and Finland (+5.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -28.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mercuries in Scandinavia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Finland, with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden stood at -26.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Norway (+23.8% per year) and Finland (+9.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -10% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, mercury import price increased by +34.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 50%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
