The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +58.0% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, plastic bottle exports reached $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) was the major exporter of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics, making up 61% of total exports. Norway (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Denmark (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total exports. Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics exports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+9.0%) and Denmark (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Norway (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sweden (+21 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Norway saw its share reduced by -20.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest plastic bottle supplying countries in Scandinavia were Sweden ($X), Norway ($X) and Denmark ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports. Finland lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 3.6%.
Finland, with a CAGR of +6.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Plastic bottle imports expanded slightly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 4.8% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.5% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, plastic bottle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Norway (X tons) represented the largest importer of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in Scandinavia, constituting 83% of total import. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), committing a 15% share of total imports. Iceland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Norway (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sweden ($X), Denmark ($X) and Norway ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 82% of total imports. Finland and Iceland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
Among the main importing countries, Iceland, with a CAGR of +6.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iceland (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
