The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood pellets and other agglomerates exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 235%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the two major exporters of wood pellets and other agglomerates, namely Namibia and South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +53.3%).
In value terms, the largest wood pellets and other agglomerates supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X).
In terms of the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +47.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.1%).

Imports in SADC
In 2022, wood pellets and other agglomerates imports in SADC rose markedly to X tons, picking up by 9.5% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood pellets and other agglomerates imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importer of wood pellets and other agglomerates in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), achieving a 26% share of total imports. Mauritius (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood pellets and other agglomerates imports into South Africa stood at -7.9%. At the same time, Mauritius (+35.9%) and Botswana (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana and Mauritius increased by +26 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mauritius ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +25.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+18.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
