After four years of growth, the SADC plastic sanitary ware market decreased by -4.2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +63.1% against 2016 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Plastic Sanitary Ware Production in SADC
In value terms, plastic sanitary ware production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +77.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic sanitary ware exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+15.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+8.9 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest plastic sanitary ware supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.0%).

Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic sanitary ware imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 29% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.8%) and Botswana (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.0%), Zimbabwe (-1.6%), Zambia (-3.5%) and Angola (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa and Botswana increased by +11, +3.6 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware in SADC, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 9.3% share.
In South Africa, plastic sanitary ware imports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+1.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
