The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa represented the main importer of paper knives in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Angola (7.2%). Botswana (X units), Mozambique (X units), Madagascar (X units), Namibia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Swaziland (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+12.2%), Madagascar (+10.2%), Tanzania (+6.6%), Swaziland (+2.5%) and Namibia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-4.3%) and Botswana (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+9.6 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.4 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.3 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and Angola saw its share reduced by -7.2% and -7.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper knives in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+7.1% per year) and Angola (+1.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
