For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of organo-sulphur compounds, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +29.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 34%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, organo-sulphur compound exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +112.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 55%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+58.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +58.9% from 2012-2022. Namibia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest organo-sulphur compound supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +4.2%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.8%).

Imports in SADC
In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of organo-sulphur compounds, when their volume decreased by -2.8% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, organo-sulphur compound imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importer of organo-sulphur compounds in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 58% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together creating a 31% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.9%), Tanzania (+2.5%) and Zambia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -3.8% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported organo-sulphur compounds in SADC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.3% per year) and Zambia (+0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
