The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 21%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical), achieving 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together making up a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nitrogenous fertilizer exports from South Africa stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Madagascar (+22.2%), Mozambique (+12.8%) and Zambia (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.2% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Madagascar (+4.8 p.p.) and Mozambique (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-3.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 31% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, nitrogenous fertilizer export price increased by +73.7% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Tanzania (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mozambique (8.7%) and Zambia (8.4%). Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Angola (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to nitrogenous fertilizer imports into South Africa stood at +6.4%.
