Nitrogenous Fertilizer Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2023, shipments abroad of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2022, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporter of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Madagascar (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Mozambique (X%) and Tanzania (X%). The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Madagascar (X%), Zambia (X%), Mauritius (X%), Mozambique (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Madagascar (X p.p.) and Zambia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania and South Africa saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest nitrogenous fertilizer supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

In 2023, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the export price increased by X%. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports declined notably to $X in 2023. Overall, imports saw a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by X% against the previous year.
