Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of manuka exported in SADC soared to X tons, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, manuka exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Zambia represented the largest exporter of manuka in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (X%).

Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the manuka exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tanzania (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) and Tanzania (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Zambia ($X) emerged as the largest manuka supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Zambia totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of manuka decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, manuka imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of manuka, achieving X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Botswana (X tons), together constituting a X% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (X%), Namibia (X%), Botswana (X%) and Mauritius (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Seychelles (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius, Botswana and Namibia increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest manuka importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Botswana ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

Botswana, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
