The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of gin and geneva, when their volume decreased by -3.1% to X litres. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, gin and geneva exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gin and geneva exports, with a CAGR of +11.9% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of South Africa (+16 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in SADC

Gin and geneva imports rose markedly to X litres in 2022, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, gin and geneva imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, amounting to X litres, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) took a 6.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (5.8%), Mozambique (5.7%), Tanzania (5.7%) and Angola (5.2%). Zambia (X litres), Botswana (X litres), Mauritius (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres), Lesotho (X litres) and Swaziland (X litres) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +29.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (+34.2%), Mauritius (+24.6%), Swaziland (+19.0%), Zimbabwe (+18.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+13.6%), Botswana (+7.7%) and Mozambique (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2022. Zambia and Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.5%) and Angola (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+40 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.1 p.p.), Lesotho (+2.1 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mozambique (-6.1 p.p.), Zambia (-7.2 p.p.), Namibia (-10.4 p.p.), Angola (-11.9 p.p.) and Tanzania (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gin and geneva in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 4.9% share.

In South Africa, gin and geneva imports expanded at an average annual rate of +22.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+7.2% per year) and Botswana (+4.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, declining by -10.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per litre), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
