The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 33%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 4.9%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of cigarettes containing tobacco, generating 46% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took near 49% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +52.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplier in SADC, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 15% share.

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in SADC

For the fourth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas purchases of cigarettes containing tobacco, which increased by 1.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented roughly 95% of total imports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 68% of total imports.

Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year.
