Wood Fuel Market Size in the Russian Federation

For the third consecutive year, the Russian wood fuel market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, consumption increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Wood fuel consumption peaked in 2020 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, wood fuel production soared to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, production increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level in 2020 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports from the Russian Federation

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of wood fuel decreased by -X% to X cubic meters in 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, wood fuel exports declined significantly to $X in 2020. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Latvia (X cubic meters), Norway (X cubic meters) and Finland (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of wood fuel exports from Russia, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Latvia (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Latvia ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wood fuel exported from Russia worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Latvia (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average wood fuel export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2020, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eight-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, wood fuel export price increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the peak figure in 2020 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wood Fuel Imports

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2020, the amount of wood fuel imported into Russia expanded slightly to X cubic meters, with an increase of X% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, wood fuel imports shrank significantly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a precipitous setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Namibia (X cubic meters) constituted the largest wood fuel supplier to Russia, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, wood fuel imports from Namibia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X cubic meters), twofold.

From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Namibia was relatively modest.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the largest wood fuel suppliers to Russia.

Among the main suppliers, Namibia recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

The average wood fuel import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2018 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Namibia stood at $X per cubic meter.

From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia.
