Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of tobacco (unmanufactured) were exported from Russia; surging by X% compared with 2019 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports totaled $X in 2020. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tonnes) was the main destination for unmanufactured tobacco exports from Russia, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tonnes), twofold. Algeria (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-X% per year) and Algeria (-X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Russia were Kazakhstan ($X), China ($X) and Ukraine ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Kazakhstan saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average unmanufactured tobacco export price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation

Unmanufactured tobacco imports into Russia contracted sharply to X tonnes in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the year before. In general, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports reduced to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. from 2013 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tonnes), Malawi (X tonnes) and India (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Russia, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malawi, while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, India ($X), Malawi ($X) and Brazil ($X) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Russia, together comprising X% of total imports.

Malawi recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2020 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per tonne), while the price for Brazil ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
