For the sixth year in a row, Russia recorded growth in overseas shipments of socks, stockings and other women's hosiery, which increased by 36% to X pairs in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 63%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, women hosiery exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X pairs) was the main destination for women hosiery exports from Russia, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, women hosiery exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X pairs), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belarus (X pairs), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine totaled +55.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+7.5% per year) and Belarus (+41.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for women hosiery exported from Russia were Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Ukraine ($X), with a combined 74% share of total exports. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Spain and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +101.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average women hosiery export price amounted to $X per pair, shrinking by -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 59%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per pair. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per pair), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kazakhstan (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, purchases abroad of socks, stockings and other women's hosiery increased by 45% to X pairs for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 119%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X pairs. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, women hosiery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 86%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X pairs) constituted the largest women hosiery supplier to Russia, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, women hosiery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X pairs), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Uzbekistan (X pairs), with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +11.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+39.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+12.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of women hosiery to Russia, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+12.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (+18.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average women hosiery import price amounted to $X per pair, reducing by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 19% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per pair in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per pair), while the price for Tajikistan ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.
