Ethylene Polymer Bag Market Size in the Russian Federation

For the fourth year in a row, the Russian ethylene polymer bag market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Ethylene polymer bag consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2022, the amount of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene exported from Russia reduced slightly to X tons, remaining stable against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethylene polymer bag exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +73.2% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for ethylene polymer bag exports from Russia, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, ethylene polymer bag exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X tons), twofold. Mongolia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +28.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+10.9% per year) and Mongolia (+69.1% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Ukraine ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for ethylene polymer bag exported from Russia worldwide, together comprising 85% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +60.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average ethylene polymer bag export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (-2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene increased by 3.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethylene polymer bag imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ethylene polymer bag to Russia, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, ethylene polymer bag imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belarus (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (-3.0% per year) and Belarus (+18.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene to Russia, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+20.0% per year) and Sweden (-4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average ethylene polymer bag import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
