Flat Glass Market Size in the Russian Federation

In 2021, the Russian flat glass market decreased by -1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 48%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, flat glass exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Ukraine (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the main destinations of flat glass exports from Russia, with a combined 55% share of total exports. Belarus, Turkey, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +196.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for flat glass exported from Russia were Ukraine ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 53% share of total exports. Finland, Turkey, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +138.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average flat glass export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 45% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of flat glass decreased by -2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, flat glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of flat glass to Russia, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, flat glass imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), fourfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belarus amounted to +21.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-0.1% per year) and China (-21.5% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of flat glass to Russia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Belarus totaled +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-0.6% per year) and Germany (+1.2% per year).

In 2021, the average flat glass import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
