Travelling Wool Rug Exports

Exports from the Russian Federation

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of blankets and travelling rugs of wool, when their volume decreased by -11.8% to X units. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 238% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, travelling wool rug exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 204%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X units) was the main destination for travelling wool rug exports from Russia, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, travelling wool rug exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X units), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus totaled +41.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.7% per year) and Ukraine (+36.5% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for blankets and travelling rugs of wool exports from Russia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belarus stood at +45.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+20.2% per year) and Armenia (+40.7% per year).

In 2022, the average travelling wool rug export price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -10% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 38%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Travelling wool rug imports into Russia fell modestly to X units in 2022, waning by -1.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travelling wool rug imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Ukraine (X units) constituted the largest supplier of travelling wool rug to Russia, with a 54% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest travelling wool rug suppliers to Russia were Ukraine ($X), Italy ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 78% share of total imports. Belarus and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.7%.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
