The unmanufactured tobacco harvested area peaked at X ha in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured tobacco exports from Romania soared to X tonnes in 2020, growing by X% compared with 2019 figures. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, exports reached the peak of X tonnes. from 2016 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports reduced to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tonnes), Italy (X tonnes) and Russia (X tonnes) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Romania, together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Croatia, Poland and Portugal, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Croatia (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Croatia ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Romania worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
