In 2021, shipments abroad of shelled hazelnuts increased by 124% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 554% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 474% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Romania, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), eightfold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary stood at -6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+11.6% per year) and the UK (+27.6% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled hazelnut exports from Romania, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hungary amounted to -6.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+13.4% per year) and the UK (+30.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average shelled hazelnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -14.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 87%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+33.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, shelled hazelnut imports into Romania rose significantly to X tons, picking up by 7.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +10.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut supplier to Romania, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), sevenfold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary totaled +7.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+24.2% per year) and Bulgaria (+37.4% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of shelled hazelnut to Romania, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Hungary stood at +5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+26.7% per year) and Turkey (+7.2% per year).
