Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium carbonate exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2019. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 161%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X kg) was the main destination for lithium carbonate exports from Romania, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of lithium carbonates, when their volume increased by 90% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lithium carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 214%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest lithium carbonate supplier to Romania, accounting for a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium carbonate imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), twofold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled +50.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+27.5% per year) and Bulgaria (+25.5% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium carbonates to Romania, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy stood at +64.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+39.0% per year) and Hungary (+310.4% per year).

The average lithium carbonate import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -13.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 66% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+53.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
