Exports from Romania

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of chalk and dolomite, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 487% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for dolomite exports from Romania, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, dolomite exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands totaled +2.8%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for chalk and dolomite exports from Romania, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands amounted to +5.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The average dolomite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 128%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Romania

In 2021, approx. X tons of chalk and dolomite were imported into Romania; increasing by 40% compared with 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dolomite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Greece (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main suppliers of dolomite imports to Romania, together comprising 83% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +44.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dolomite suppliers to Romania were Greece ($X), Austria ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average dolomite import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -17.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
