Dolomite Exports

Exports from Romania

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of chalk and dolomite, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 487% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for dolomite exports from Romania, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, dolomite exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands totaled +2.8%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for chalk and dolomite exports from Romania, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

The average dolomite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Romania

In 2021, approx. X tons of chalk and dolomite were imported into Romania; increasing by 40% compared with 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dolomite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Greece (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) were the main suppliers of dolomite imports to Romania, together comprising 83% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 16%.
