In value terms, clay exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 559%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) was the main destination for clay exports from Romania, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, clay exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain stood at +207.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+78.1% per year) and Austria (+54.2% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the key foreign market for clay exports from Romania, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Spain totaled +162.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+64.0% per year) and Austria (+31.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -53.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a dramatic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, purchases abroad of clays decreased by -3.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, clay imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bulgaria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of clay imports to Romania, together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, Italy and Poland, which together accounted for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Italy (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest clay suppliers to Romania, together accounting for 55% of total imports.
Italy, with a CAGR of +10.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average clay import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 27%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+22.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
