Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. Bulgaria (X tons) was the main destination for chlorides exports from Romania, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, chlorides exports to Bulgaria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), more than tenfold. Greece (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bulgaria amounted to +11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (-4.4% per year) and Greece (+11.9% per year).

The second position in the ranking was taken by Greece ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bulgaria stood at +10.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Greece (+11.8% per year) and Moldova (+6.6% per year).

In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides supplier to Romania, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, chlorides imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 13% share.

In terms of the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +35.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 45%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
