Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +36.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of nucleic acid exports from South Korea, with a combined 55% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, the United States, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the UK and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +46.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ireland ($X), Switzerland ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for nucleic acid exported from South Korea worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Japan, China, Belgium, Indonesia, Vietnam, the UK, Bangladesh and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +952.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average nucleic acid export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+60.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Republic of Korea
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of nucleic acids and their salts decreased by -11.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, nucleic acid imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +26.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nucleic acid to South Korea, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, nucleic acid imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), threefold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+22.7% per year) and India (+12.6% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest nucleic acid suppliers to South Korea, together accounting for 76% of total imports.
India, with a CAGR of +18.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nucleic acid import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
