For the third year in a row, South Korea recorded growth in overseas shipments of herbicides, which increased by X% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, herbicide exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for herbicide exports from South Korea, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, herbicide exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tons), threefold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (-X% per year) and Vietnam (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for herbicide exported from South Korea were Japan ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Pakistan, Egypt and Israel, which together accounted for a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average herbicide export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then plummeted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Republic of Korea

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of herbicides, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, herbicide imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest herbicide supplier to South Korea, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, herbicide imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-X% per year) and Indonesia (-X% per year).
