China (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total exports in 2021. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.1% share, followed by Uzbekistan (7.7%), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (5%) and Brazil (4.8%). The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) - together made up 3.3% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Vietnam (with a CAGR of +65.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 76% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +68.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, India (X tons) was the largest importer of raw silk, mixing up 36% of total imports. Romania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took near 37% share of total imports. Iran (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Japan (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to raw silk imports into India stood at -10.0%. At the same time, Slovenia (+161.5%), Malaysia (+17.5%), Iran (+9.1%) and China (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +161.5% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%), Italy (-2.8%), Romania (-4.5%), Vietnam (-7.6%), Japan (-12.4%) and South Korea (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+7.1 p.p.), Malaysia (+3 p.p.), Iran (+2.6 p.p.), Italy (+2.6 p.p.), Slovenia (+1.7 p.p.) and Romania (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-2.7 p.p.), South Korea (-3.3 p.p.) and India (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported raw silk into Puerto Rico, comprising 37% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India totaled -8.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Romania (-3.7% per year) and Italy (-1.4% per year).
