In value terms, Canada ($X), the United States ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 37% share of total exports. Norway, Belgium, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UK, Japan, Australia, China, Turkey, Russia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +322.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Puerto Rico stood at less than $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belgium (+49.3%) and Norway (+16.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +49.3% from 2012-2021. The UK experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-1.4%), Japan (-1.8%) and Finland (-60.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+26 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of the UK (-2.4 p.p.), Japan (-4.6 p.p.), the United States (-4.7 p.p.) and Finland (-10.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cobalt into Puerto Rico, comprising 64% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 5.8% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.4% share.

In China, cobalt imports increased at an average annual rate of +27.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+2.5% per year) and the United States (+2.0% per year).
