After two years of growth, the Puerto Rican chili and pepper market decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption recorded a mild decline. Puerto Rico consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Chili And Pepper Exports

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the largest exporters of chilies and peppers (green)across the globe, together mixing up 51% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Turkey (4.6%). The following exporters - Canada (X tons), Morocco (X tons), the United States (X tons), China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Israel (X tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper supplying countries from Puerto Rico were Spain ($X), Mexico ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 64% of total exports. Canada, the United States, Morocco, Turkey, Israel, China and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +29.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The following importers - Canada (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chili and pepper imports into the United States stood at +4.5%. At the same time, Thailand (+56.5%), Spain (+13.1%), Austria (+8.3%), Poland (+5.0%), the UK (+3.9%), Italy (+2.8%), Canada (+2.8%), France (+2.6%) and Germany (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +56.5% from 2012-2021. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.4%) and Russia (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United States and Thailand increased by +2.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 53% share of total imports. France, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Spain and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
