Cabbage Market Size in Puerto Rico

In 2021, the Puerto Rican cabbage market decreased by -0.7% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cabbage Production in Puerto Rico

In value terms, cabbage production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Puerto Rico production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in Puerto Rico totaled X tons per ha in 2021, flattening at the year before. Overall, the yield indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cabbage yield decreased by -6.4% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the cabbage yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of cabbage and other brassicas production in Puerto Rico amounted to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the harvested area recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cabbage Exports

Exports by Country

China was the key exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 33% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together mixing up a 25% share of total exports. Spain (X tons), Canada (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Poland (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from China stood at +7.1%. At the same time, Guatemala (+28.9%), Uzbekistan (+15.2%), Mexico (+10.3%), Vietnam (+9.5%), Belgium (+6.9%), Canada (+6.4%), Spain (+5.7%), Italy (+3.0%) and Germany (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012-2021. The Netherlands and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+6.9 p.p.), Mexico (+3.6 p.p.), Guatemala (+2.4 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-3.2 p.p.), Poland (-3.9 p.p.) and the United States (-4.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 59% of total exports. The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Canada, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +22.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the major importers of cabbage and other brassicas in 2021, amounting to approx. 18% and 18% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together creating a 25% share of total imports. El Salvador (X tons), Russia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the UK (X tons), France (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage importing markets into Puerto Rico were the United States ($X), Canada ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 49% of total imports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the UK, Thailand, France, Singapore, Russia, Taiwan (Chinese) and El Salvador, which together accounted for a further 29%.

In terms of the main importing countries, El Salvador, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
