In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the Portuguese pyrethrum and peppermint market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and Israel (X tonnes) were the main destinations of pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Portugal, together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, the UK, Iran and Malta, which together accounted for a further X 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Malta (+X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Israel ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest markets for pyrethrum and peppermint exported from Portugal worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. Malta, the UK, France and Iran lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average pyrethrum and peppermint export price amounted to $X per tonne, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malta (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Portugal
In 2021, purchases abroad of pyrethrum and peppermint decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tonnes) constituted the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier to Portugal, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, pyrethrum and peppermint imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Paraguay (X tonnes), threefold. Poland (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Paraguay (-X% per year) and Poland (+X% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest pyrethrum and peppermint suppliers to Portugal, with a combined X% share of total imports. Uruguay, Paraguay, the Netherlands, Latvia, India, Egypt and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X Netherlands, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average pyrethrum and peppermint import price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per tonne), while the price for India ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
