The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, asparagus exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Poland, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Greece (X tons), with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at -10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+10.9% per year) and Greece (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for asparagus exports from Poland, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to -11.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+14.6% per year) and France (+5.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average asparagus export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Asparagus Imports
Imports into Poland
In 2021, supplies from abroad of asparagus decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 84%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, asparagus imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 138% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of asparagus imports to Poland, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Italy, Belgium and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +122.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest asparagus suppliers to Poland were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Italy, Belgium and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +119.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average asparagus import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, asparagus import price increased by +82.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
