As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2020, the average yield of potatoes in Pakistan expanded modestly to X tonnes per ha, increasing by X% against the previous year. In 2020, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, potato exports fell significantly to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Sri Lanka (X tonnes), the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) and Qatar (X tonnes) were the main destinations of potato exports from Pakistan, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Qatar ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for potato exported from Pakistan worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Qatar (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Malaysia ($X per tonne) and Qatar ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per tonne) and Oman ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Pakistan

In 2020, purchases abroad of potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, potato imports surged to $X in 2020. In general, imports recorded strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Iran (X tonnes), the Netherlands (X tonnes) and Afghanistan (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Pakistan, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Afghanistan (+X% per year), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Pakistan, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Iran ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).

In 2020, the average potato import price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
