Barley Market Size in Pakistan

The Pakistani barley market declined to $X in 2020, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of barley in Pakistan contracted slightly to X kg per ha in 2020, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when the yield increased by X% year-to-year. The barley yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The barley harvested area in Pakistan dropped modestly to X ha in 2020, shrinking by -X% against 2019 figures. In 2020, shipments abroad of barley decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the sixth year in a row after eight years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Bahrain (X tonnes), Afghanistan (X tonnes) and Oman (X tonnes) were the main destinations of barley exports from Pakistan.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bahrain, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bahrain ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Oman ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for barley exported from Pakistan worldwide.

In 2020, overseas purchases of barley decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, barley imports reached $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Australia (X tonnes), Afghanistan (X tonnes) and Ukraine (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Pakistan, with a combined X% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Afghanistan, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
