Sesame Oil Market Size in Nigeria

The Nigerien sesame oil market contracted to $X in 2020, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, sesame oil exports dropped significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The smallest decline of -X% was in 2014. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

China (X tonnes) was the main destination for sesame oil exports from Nigeria, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, sesame oil exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes), more than tenfold. Turkey (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to China totaled -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-X% per year) and Turkey (-X% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame oil exports from Nigeria, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-X% per year) and Turkey (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average sesame oil export price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Viet Nam ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2020, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sesame oil, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sesame oil imports shrank markedly to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In 2020, Lebanon (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of sesame oil to Nigeria, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, sesame oil imports from Lebanon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tonnes), threefold. The United Arab Emirates (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lebanon amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-X% per year).
