Preserved Frozen Potato Exports

Exports from the Netherlands

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved frozen potato exports from the Netherlands, together accounting for 37% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, Poland, Colombia, Sweden, Ireland, Brazil and Australia, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +21.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sweden (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato imports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved frozen potato to the Netherlands, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved frozen potato imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 12% share.
